Prenatal Yoga and Parent Education Retreat

Take time to retreat into yourself while developing useful techniques and knowledge in a supportive environment for enhancing the pregnancy and birthing process.

We invite you to join us in your journey through pregnancy for this long weekend retreat, a unique opportunity for expectant mothers and birth partners. You will gain confidence and inspiration through workshops on pregnancy, birth and the postnatal period, offered by our registered midwife and prenatal yoga teacher, Fay Lodge. This program has been intentionally designed for women, couples and birth partners seeking support, empowerment and revitalisation.

Retreat Calendar

Prenatal Retreats 2019: May 24-27th and July 19-22nd

Yoga and Meditation

Beginning each day with pranayama, meditation and gentle yoga you will experience a safe and time tested approach for deepening relaxation, remaining strong and flexible while pregnant and easing the birthing process. The practice of meditation can have a dramatic effect on women and couples´ capacities to bring presence and enjoyment into the pregnancy, birth and beyond, while pranayama techniques practised during the pregnancy will prove to be highly effective in mastering contractions during your labour.

Pregnancy, Birth and your New Baby: Learn from an Experienced Midwife

In these workshops, midwife Fay Lodge (RM, NMP, BMidwifery, MSc) will be deconstructing the mysterious and exciting phases that take place throughout pregnancy, birth and those precious early weeks with your new baby. Here you will be able to find answers to the multitude of questions and concerns that can arise for any woman or couple as the pregnancy progresses, such as “How does labour start?”, “When will my waters go?”, “What techniques are available to cope with contractions?”, “What about the placenta?”, “How should I feed my baby?”.

Fay will be available throughout the retreat for personalised consultations on behalf of individuals, birth partners and couples seeking advice about their role, birth preferences, anxieties or any other personal questions regarding pregnancy, labour, birth and their new baby (see “Consultations and Treatments” section below for more information).

"I'm so grateful to Aly and Simon, our midwife Fay and her partner Cal, and our herbalist Ása for organizing our prenatal yoga retreat. The experience was so incredibly empowering it brought me to tears on so many occasions (e.g. listening to Aly's soothing voice during Savasana, hearing Ása's home birth stories, saying goodbye to everyone on our last day). I learned so many practical things, including pregnancy-friendly yoga poses, breathing techniques, active labor positions, natural relief options for pregnancy and labor, and delicious vegan recipes. More importantly, I learned how to trust my body's innate ability to grow and birth my baby. I can only highly recommend the pregnancy retreat at Asturias Yoga. I'm definitely coming back again after our baby arrives -- hopefully to join their Ashtanga Yoga Full Primary Series Retreat."

About your Retreat Facilitators

Fay Lodge RM, NMP, BMidwifery, MSc Midwifery, 200hr RYT, PYT

I started my training to become a midwife at Manchester University in 2007 and quickly found my passion was for promoting and enabling normality during pregnancy, birth and the postnatal period. I fully believe that by empowering women to trust in themselves and their bodies’capabilities, they can achieve a fulfilling birth experience that is more likely to follow a natural course without the need for medical intervention. On qualifying I returned to my home town to work from my local hospital where the home birth rate is above the UK national average. I quickly progressed to a community position where my role involved supporting women and their families during low risk pregnancy, attending births at home and on the two birth centres in the area and providing postnatal support through visits to homes and in clinics. I completed my MSc in Midwifery in August 2015 and published a systematic review inthe British Journal of Midwifery on how maternal position at birth affects the rate of perineal trauma; with aspecific focuson natural, upright birth positions.I have found the practice of yoga during pregnancy has many benefits. Asana strengthens the core muscles used to support the abdomen and pelvic floor; especially important during pregnancy, for labour and aiding a quick recovery following birth; while the practices of pranayama and meditation provide techniques that can be utilised during labour to help women remain calm and relaxed. This is proven to reduce pain from contractions by encouraging the release of endorphins and also to aid the progress of labour by the release of oxytocin. I believe through the use of antenatal education, preparation and empowerment women can loose their fear of childbirth and enjoy this most powerful and special time in their lives. I have supported many women to achieve a positive pregnancy and birth experience and look forward to sharing this special time with you.

Ása Jelena: Certified Herbalist, Massage Therapist

Ása graduated in 2012 with a degree in herbal medicine, and since then has had a particular interest in female health during pregnancy and birth. She was very inspired by the effect it had on her own pregnancies, birth and also the aftercare of baby and mother.

She works closely with a support group of homebirth in Asturias (Dar a luz en casa Asturias) giving workshops and talks.

Ása says that her aim is to offer alternative practical advice to inspire the use of safe and common medicinal plants during the most transformational time in a woman´s life.

Yoga summons us to turn the senses inwards, finding the pause within.
